2017-2018 MODEL UN PLANNING
If you are unfamiliar with Model UN, I can explain that Model UN is a simulation of the sort of meetings held by the UN General Assembly, Security Council, or other UN bodies. Students get together as ambassadors representing their own country to reach consensus on important issues.
Four years ago, Model UN had very little presence in the Orlando area. Now we have MUN clubs operating in 36 schools at college, high school, and middle school levels.
This year we are doing something different. We noticed that the most significant cause of failure for a Model UN club was the difficulty of transitioning from one school year to the next. With that in mind, we have held planning meetings and several end-of-year events over the past month designed to give the clubs a running start into the 2017-2018 school year.
Classes for the new school year begin in early August. Between now and then, we will need the help of people with Model UN experience especially but also anyone who can help design the materials that will be used during the 8 training workshops and mini-conferences that we will hold.
The first Model UN event of the new school year will be held in mid-September. We have held one planning meeting already and will soon hold a second planning meeting with the goal of completing all preparation work by the first week of August.
