MAY 30 ONLINE DISCUSSION:
climate and the coronavirus pandemic
2:00-4:00PM, SATURDAY, MAY 30 (GOOGLE MEET)
BLUE SKIES AND CLEAR WATER: A NOT-SO-SURPRISING RESULT OF SHUTTING DOWN FACTORIES, TURNING OUR CAR ENGINES OFF, AND GROUNDING THE WORLD'S AIRPLANES. NOW THAT WE HAVE SEEN THE DIRECT IMPACT THAT HUMAN ACTIVITY HAS ON OUR ENVIRONMENT, WILL WE RETURN TO BUSINESS AS "NORMAL"? OR WILL WE TRY SOMETHING NEW?
At the start of 2020, our plan was to use our "An Informed Citizenry" featured issue as a thematic lesson plan to analyze each of our other featured issues. Meeting online, we will discuss the overlap between the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing climate crisis, and the quality of information we are receiving from our schools, media, public officials, and other sources.
We will also consider what the post-pandemic period will look like when the entire world comes to the inevitable "What now?" moment.
This will be the first of a series of Saturday discussions that will be held online throughout the month of June. To prepare for May 30th, familiarize yourself with the Learning Resources pages that we have on the UNA-Orlando website (links will be provided after you click the 'SUBMIT' at the bottom of this page).
The meeting will be held online using Google Meet. Buttons similar to the one below will be placed on multiple pages and will all be activated at 1:30PM on May 30th, 30 minutes to the start of the discussion.
