THE UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
2019 UNITED NATIONS DAY
For this year's UN Day, as part of our focus on Democratic Governance we conducted a mock election based on the real election in Argentina. In August, our "candidates" began their campaigns just as the real candidates were campaigning in Argentina. Our "voters" followed the news from Argentina and familiarized themselves with the candidates and issues that would be on the ballot.
The event was held on October 26th. The room was arranged to host a candidates' debate at one end. The opposite end of the room was arranged to resemble an Argentinian polling station. During the debate, Macri and Fernandez fielded questions from Argentine and World media outlets. Once the polls opened, international elections monitors from The Carter Center, OECD, and the Organization of American States observed the voting procedures. Poll workers distributed ballots and in the end counted the votes. Minutes before results were to be announced, protesters denounced the election as "rigged."
