ONLINE DISCUSSION: THE CONNECTION BETWEEN SOCIAL IDENTITY, COGNITIVE DISSONANCE, AND TRUTH DENIAL
SESSION 1: Sunday, August 15 | SESSION 2: Monday, August 16
It is human to want to be accepted by the people around us. To be accepted by any particular in-group, people will mimic the behaviors of the group they want to join. They will change their clothes, hair, language, mannerisms, and music choices. They will even alter their opinions to conform to the opinions of the group, or at least pretend to change their opinions even though they might actually think otherwise.
Between now and August 15th, we will consider why people claim to believe that global warming isn't real, that vaccines have microchips to track our activities, or that victims of gun violence are "disaster actors." Is it possible that people promoting misinformation actually don't believe the lies but say they do because they fear rejection from the group?
The discussion will begin at 6pm on Sunday, August 15th and 2pm on Monday, August 16th. It's ok to attend both sessions or just one of the two. Use the articles and videos on this page to prepare for the discussion. Complete the form at the bottom of the page to let us know whether you do or do not plan to attend.
