CONGO INTRODUCTION PAGE
CONGO, THE CHAD BASIN, AND
THE AFRICAN GREAT LAKES REGION
In the late 1800s, as Colonial powers competed for Africa's resources, one man, the King of Belgium, claimed a tract of land for himself south of the Congo River that was as large as all of Western Europe. He named his land the Congo Free State. Under Leopold's rule, the entire population was forced into slavery to extract resources to be sold in Europe and other parts of the world. An estimated 15 million people were murdered. Since then, the region has experienced constant war and its people have remained impoverished despite the wealth that is produced by its natural resources.
