2017-2018 MODEL UN PLANNING
Model UN is a simulation of the sort of meetings held by the UN General Assembly, Security Council, or other UN bodies. Students get together as ambassadors representing their own country to reach consensus on important issues. Four years ago, Model UN had very little presence in the Orlando area. Now we have MUN clubs operating in 39 schools at college, high school, and middle school levels.
Our regular practice is to maintain a regular schedule of Model UN workshops (2-4 hours) and mini-conferences (up to 6 hours) to prepare the students for major Model UN conferences.
Our first Model UN event of the new school year was cancelled due to the hurricane and was replaced with a modified version that was called Irma-MUN.
Rather than joining together with all the clubs together in one location at the same time, Irma-MUN had each club holding their own Model UN workshop at their own schools with their own members.
The topic was Conflict and Environmental Destruction in Nigeria. To prepare for the workshop, students were instructed to study/research the information presented on the following pages:
Now that the students have conducted their own self-guided workshops, we have scheduled a 6-hour Model UN mini-conference that will be held at Lake Mary Prep. on Saturday, October 14th.
On the day of the event, we have a need for the following:
- several people with Model UN experience to staff the event's dais and provide mentorship to high school and middle school students who are inexperienced or only moderately experienced
- general event support
