Burundi Election Update
As the year opened, Burundians looked forward to election day when they would peaceably replace their term limited president with a new national leader. However, it didn't happen that way. Instead, the president announced that he would run for a third term despite the constitution. Since then, the Rift Valley nation of Hutus and Tutsis has experienced election postponements, coercion of judges, political executions, and clashes between opposing sides all of it resulting in a high number of deaths. With the situation at a critical point, what happens in the coming days and weeks will steer its way towards chaos or towards a peaceful resolution.
