INTRO

In 2016 Turkey experienced a failed military coup attempt that has sent the country into a struggle to maintain both democracy and stability ever since. The state now experiences heightened levels of media censorship and repression with hundreds of thousands being detained, jailed, and/or removed from their institutions through a suggested political purge. The 2018 elections that retained the Justice and Development Party's (AKP) majority and re-elected President Erdoğan has given him the ability to further stretch executive abuses of power, diminish parliaments checks and balances in government, and consolidate the presidents control on judicial appointments.
