ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In our Google Meet meeting, I mentioned something that we didn't get the chance to talk about too much. My normal routine is to tell people that there is only one option. That is to be a a person who spends all their time bopping around the Internet and sending content, and then going to a few meetings.

The position title for that is Content Contributor or Issue Analysis Specialist.

After a person has submitted some number of submissions (7? 24?), I contact them and offer them to manage one of the Featured Issues pages.

The title for that is simply Page Manager, or it could be Issue Analysis Manager.

Then if the person does well as a Page Manager, I contact them and offer them to be a person who manages several Page Managers (I forget the title for the person who manages Page Managers).

Through this period of time, at a point where I recognize that I trust a person to do more, I contact them and offer roles that are involved with the chapter's operation and management.

I mention all this to show that there is normally a progression for what people do with UNA-Orlando. Since you have the chance to jump ahead without going through the normal onboarding process, we should talk about what you want to do throughout the summer.

You could spend all summer accumulating your internship hours exploring the Internet and submitting content. In that situation your position title would be what I mentioned: Content Contributor or Issue Analysis Specialist.

If you want to jump right into helping with the management of the chapter, we can talk about any of the position in the list below. But if you do want to spend your summer directly involved with the management of the chapter, you can be what I'm currently calling: Executive Operations Officer, which would you helping me transition out of COVID mode into post-COVID mode.

This would still be all or mostly virtual/online unless we decide to hold some meetings/events in person.

If you're not sure what you want to do throughout the summer, you could choose all-encompassing title that is embedded in the title of your internship: Global Issues and Community Action Intern.

To answer your question directly, yes I have time today to talk about this with you. Let me know when you want to meet.

When I first got involved with UNA-Orlando, I used to go to New York and Washington more when UNA-USA would have events. At some point I noticed that when UN people were talking to each other they would use a term "at capacity" to describe projects and programs that they organize around the world. Think of the World Health Organization setting up a hospital somewhere or UN Peacekeepers launching a peacekeeping mission. "At capacity" meant that whatever operation they were building was fully functional.

Imagining what UNA-Orlando would look like if it were to operate at capacity, I created the list and chart below. That was 2015. For three years things went well, and we made a lot of progress. Then COVID happened.

Now, as I'm thinking of a position title, I'm thinking of what I expect you to do between now and the end of August. With this Roles and Responsibilities list, I have full descriptions of each but I can't find them. Another thing I can't find is a set of roles I created for people directly with the Chapter President (whoever is in the role of president).

Between now and the end of August, if you are interested, I believe you can be involved in everything I am doing to rebuild to it's post-COVID capacity. Here's what that means:

The simplest way to describe what I believe you could do is do everything I do as I'm doing it. So what do we call that?

I still haven't gotten my emails out to invite to our meetings, so if you have time tonight we can talk about what you hope to accomplish over the the next few months and what your position title should be.
